To Purchase Or Not Purchase?

Should I or should I not purchase travel insurance? That is the popular question these days. Whenever you purchase plane tickets, cruise tickets, or book a hotel, you are usually asked if you want to purchase travel insurance.

Due to the purchase of travel insurance being an additional cost, many travelers usually opt out of it. It is often thought of as an unnecessary add-on like extended warranties and generally considered not worth it.

What else do I need to know?

Be sure to thoroughly read the Terms and Conditions before purchasing, because you may find a long list of limitations and exclusions that could void the insurance policy. Many travelers found this out when they had to cancel their trips due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Although pandemics are generally excluded from most travel insurance policies, some policies are now offering some levels of pandemic coverage.

Here’s the bottom line. Travel insurance can save you from significant financial losses in the case of the unexpected. If the pandemic has taught us anything, it is, things happen, things change, and nothing is certain. Be sure to check the fine print and choose your policy wisely. Lastly, have peace of mind and enjoy your vacation knowing you’re covered.

Waiting On Your Passport?

Passport Processing Requiring Patience

According to the State Department, the passport application process is taking more than four months (18 weeks), and “expedited” service may only shorten the wait to three months. This means that passport processing times are three times as long as the average wait time prior to the pandemic. The State Department website indicates the dramatic delays are the result of COVID-related issues…not to mention the drastic uptick in travel which is causing a high demand for passports.

If you need to renew your passports immediately, unfortunately you are no longer able to book last-minute appointments online. The State Department announced this change on July 22nd, 2021. For emergency appointments, you can refer to the table on the “ Get It Fast ” passport section of the State Department’s website.

Here are a few things you can do right now.

1. Check to see when your passport expires. Lots of travelers assume that if their passport expires right after the end of their trip, they will be okay. Sadly, many countries require that your passport be valid for at least 6 months past your entry date. And with additional border controls in place at this time, it isn’t wise to take the risk of ruining your travel plans.

2. If you need an emergency passport or renewal, do not delay and to begin the process immediately.

3. Locate your closest passport agency for help and information. To make this easier, here is a link to all the major agencies .

4. There are a few private services that specialize in handling expedited passports. This may set you back anywhere from an extra $60 to $400, so there’s another reason to keep on top of your passport expiration date. Here are links to a few of these services:

Get Ready For Travel

Are You Travel Ready?

Demand for future travel is increasing and will likely outpace supply, even as more options reopen. One of the most important preparations for future travel is ensuring you have the appropriate travel ID. You don’t want to arrive at the airport for your long-awaited vacation, only to be denied boarding because of an identification issue!

Now is the time to make sure your identification documents are ready. The COVID-19 pandemic is causing delays in passport processing. Standard processing for new and renewal applications is currently 10-12 weeks, or 4-6 weeks if paying an additional $60 expedite fee.* Even flying to U.S. destinations, you need to be ready for the new REAL ID requirements going into effect on October 1, 2021.

What should you know about getting your IDs ready to travel? I’ve highlighted a few key points.

PASSPORTS

P hysical Inspection – Look carefully at your passport, and the passports of everyone in your household. Is it free of water damage, significant tears, missing pages, or other deterioration? Any of these issues can make a passport invalid for travel.

Expiration Date – It’s surprising how quickly this can sneak up on you, especially for minors who receive only five years of passport validity. Some countries require a passport to have at least 3-6 months of remaining validity when you arrive. Therefore, it’s recommended to start the renewal process 9 months before a passport’s expiration date.

Accurate Information – Is the personal data on the passport accurate? Travel reservations need to match each person’s name exactly as it appears on the passport. If a correction or name change is needed, follow the directions on the US State Department website.

Blank Pages – Count how many blank pages remain in the passport booklet. (Note: The last two endorsement pages don’t count.) Immigration officials use these blank pages to add entry stamps or visas. Some countries require two to four blank pages available upon entry. If you’re almost out of space, it’s time to renew. If you’re a frequent traveler like myself, you may want to request a larger, 52-page passport book.

D RIVER’S LICENSE/STATE ID

Expiration Date – Once again, physically pull out your current license or ID card and verify the expiration date. If you’re close to the renewal date, check with your state’s motor vehicle bureau to see what the current procedures and processing times are.

REAL ID – Beginning October 1, domestic air passengers will be required to present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or state ID card. Adult travelers (ages 18+) will not be allowed through the security checkpoint or onto an aircraft if they fail to do so. REAL ID-compliant cards are marked with a star at the top. For details on how to obtain this type of ID, contact your state driver’s license agency.

Alternative ID Options – Travelers without a REAL ID may be able to use another acceptable document, including a valid passport or passport card, for domestic air travel. Remember that the name on each passenger’s airline reservation needs to match the identification document they will be presenting.

Road trips are back at the top of travel lists, as more people opt to explore the United States. For couples, taking a road trip together offers a chance to reconnect and make new memories together. If you’re a honeymooner, celebrating your anniversary, or first-time travel partners who are considering a road trip, here are some ideas to help you find romance on the road. As a romance specialist and one who loves and values romance in my personal life, I have tested all of these.

Navigating Together

On a road trip, navigating is part of the fun. Tracing the route, taking an impromptu detour to see a roadside attraction, and refueling at a locally-owned diner, are reminders that the journey is as important as the destination. My husband and I took a road trip to visit family and on the return trip, we mapped out a route to make a stop in Mississippi to celebrate our anniversary. We ate at local restaurants and checked out a few attractions. Oh, you didn’t think I was going to skip out on the beach did you? Yes, we spent a little time on the beach, enjoying the amazing views and sunsets.

Saying “Yes” To Spontaneity

Road tripping allows you to follow your whims, whether it be taking the slower but more scenic route, or stopping to peruse a peculiar antique shop. In our daily lives, many of us are locked into routines and obligations. Road trips offer you and your traveling partner a chance to give into spontaneity and explore the unexpected together…which is important for any long-lasting relationship. These moments can become the source of stories you’ll tell for decades to come. My husband and I always try to carve out a little time for spontaneous stops on the back end of our road trips. I tell you, it takes the stress out the trip by eliminating the need to return home by a specified time.

Building Your Playlists

Oh my, what’s a road trip without good ole’ music? Music connects us. It helps us convey our feelings and emotions to one another. Music transports us to a certain time and place. It even turns us into mobile karaoke singers. Yes, music will make you hit a note and make you think you can sing even if you can’t. But the only thing that matters is you’re having fun and singing your heart out with the one you love. So, before setting out on a road trip, build your playlists with songs that tell a story about your relationship. As an alternative, you can choose your favorite streaming service with your favorite music theme to keep you both guessing what songs you’ll be singing mile after mile!

Capturing The Journey

Say what? No pictures to share? With easy access to phone cameras, there’s simply no reason for missed opportunities to snap photos together at every destination along the way. After all, capturing the journey is part of the journey. You do want to practice using your camera or phone’s self-timer and don’t forget to pack a selfie stick. Snapping pictures is one of the best ways to make sure the memories of your road trip last for years to come!

With every road trip, you can bet that we will accumulate a few hundred pictures. It just feels good to return home, look through all our pictures and reminisce on the entire experience. It’s that moment when you take it all in. Very refreshing!

Canceled events, working from home while homeschooling, higher health risks for going out in public, job loss, etc. are all reasons why 2020 has been extremely stressful. All the stress has taken a toll on our mental health. With all the turbulence this year has brought, travelers are focusing on ways to enhance their wellbeing. This includes physical, mental and spiritual wellness.

One wellness solution that many look to is travel. When most of us think of wellness travel, we think of escaping our everyday lives for rest and relaxation. This results in reduced stress and anxiety.

Studies show that the main components of wellness travel are: healthy meals, outdoor experiences, fitness activities, meditation and nutrition. So, why wellness travel you might ask? When my husband and I travel, we typically experience all of the above. Food is one of the most interactive and sensory ways to experience a destination’s culture. It’s also one of the most often talked about parts of our vacations. In Europe, we often aspire to eat Neopolitan pizza in Italy, croissants in France and fish and chips in England. Even if you don’t call yourself a “foodie” you’ll most likely want to try some local specialties.

As we visit Europe, we marvel at the age of their buildings and cities. 1) Choose Your Method.

There are several methods you can use to create a bucket list…a notebook, a digital document or even a jar full of notes. The important thing is that whatever you choose, you use. You will want to look at your list on a regular basis so be sure it is something that will be easy for you to access. Digital documents, like Google docs, are great because you can easily add things like images or links. They are easy to share with your travel partner and your travel advisor.

2) Make a List of Where You Have Been.

Thinking about past vacations and what you liked (and didn’t like) is a great place to start. If you're traveling as a couple, this is even more important. You might want to re-explore previous adventures or agree that exploring new things is the way to go. Either way, creating this list will further the discussion. If you are a solo traveler, this will help you determine what is really meaningful when it comes to your travel desires.

3) Next, List Your Destinations.

This is the fun step. Use your imagination. At this point, don’t hold back due to time or financial concerns. Just list all the places you have ever dreamed of. For example, where did you want to go when you were 6 years old? Or 10 or 16 years old? Or maybe just last week? Don’t forget to include the places that have always been on your wish list. 4) What Do You Want to Experience?

Places are one thing...Activities are another. Have you always wanted to go Northern Lights hunting? Or maybe on an African Safari? Is it swimming with dolphins in Mexico or diving with sharks in South Africa that interest you? Does visiting the Smithsonian in DC or hot air ballooning over the dessert Southwest call to you? This is the step where you get to list all the things you’ve ever wanted to do. As a couple, this can be a fun step of discovery. Just like with destinations, I can let you in on some of the secrets that only travel insiders know about.

5) Put Things in Order.

Your list is probably getting a little long at this point. Now is the time to apply some practical thinking. Look through your destinations list and highlight the 4 or 5 places that mean the most to you. It doesn’t mean you won’t ever see the other destinations, but you do need to start somewhere. Then look through your activities list. Are there any that fit one destination more than another? Add them to your list. Lastly, go through your list one more time to make sure you didn’t leave anything out. Once this is done, you have finished your basic list. Now to apply some action to it.

6) Establish a Timeline.

Now it’s time to plan and assign those destinations and activities to dates. Consider the time and money you wish to invest in traveling. Yes, it is an investment. Remember, travel is the activity where you spend money, but you return richer, because you are relaxed and rejuvenated. Align your goals with the practical aspects of your budget and available time and, in short order, you will have a plan of where to go and what to do over the next few years. 7) Check Them Off Your List.

Of course, none of this really means much if you never visit the destinations on your bucket list. Once you get started, you’ll find that wanderlust keeps building up. It’s important to remember that this is YOUR travel bucket list, so if life gets in the way sometimes, no worries. You are the master of the list and can always adjust it as needed. It's A Wine Thing

Did you know that Italy produces more wine than any other country and its wine history dates back about 4000 years? Holding the number one spot in wine production, Italy produced over 4,750,000 liters of wine in 2019. About 1/3 of the world’s wine is produced in Italy. Although the country consumes and enjoys some of the wine it produces, Italy exports most of its wine to different parts of the world. All 20 of Italy’s wine regions produces their share of wine and of the regions, Veneto is the leading producer.

The country’s climate makes it the perfect environment to grow grapes. Italy boasts over 2000 varieties of grapes. The most popular red grapes are Sangiovese, Primitivo, Montepulciano and Barbera and the most popular white grapes are Trebbiano and Catarratto. At one point and time, red wine was my favorite. However, over the last few years, white wine is now my wine of choice. Typically, I like any kind of Moscato. Whenever I do consume wine, it has to be sweet, thus the reason why I am drawn to Moscato wines.

Wine tours are a great way to immerse yourself in the Italian history, while quenching your taste buds through wine tastings. Wine tours allow you to learn the history behind every bottle of wine produced in a particular region. You can take either a self-guided or guided wine tour. If you are self-touring and driving the country sides, it is possible to stop at certain wineries for a tour. However, it is recommended that you make reservations prior to dropping in to any winery. Guided wine tours ensure that you enjoy a more personal experience. If you’re a wine-enthusiast, I’m sure you have some (if not all) of Italy’s regions on your bucket list.

Trailing Italy, the United States is in the top five for wine production, with 2,430,000 liters produced in 2019. California is, by far, the United States’ largest wine producing state and is considered the wine capital of the US. Like Italy, California has a climate and landscape that is conducive for growing wine grapes. Wine country (which is comprised of the counties of Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino, Lake and Solano) is a region in California that is known for its premier growing of wine. Napa Valley is the region that is considered to have put the US on the map in regards to good wine.

California is home to almost 50% of wineries in the US. When you visit the state, you almost have to take a wine tour and/or do a wine tasting at one of the wineries. Some of California’s most popular wineries include:

Artesa Winery – Talking about wine tasting with a view, Artesa has the best of both worlds. The wine tasting room is located in a hill, which asserts amazing views as you sample various wines. The wines are flavorful and unique in their own way.

Kunde Family Winery – Also with an amazing view, this winery was the filming location for the Bottle Shocked film. The boxing ring still remains on the mountaintop. During your visit, you can do a cave tour and finish up with a wine tasting on the mountaintop. The view will leave you breathless.

Stags Leap Winery – If you’re looking for a winery with a romantic twist, this is it. In fact, it was voted one of the 5 most romantic wineries in the Sonoma Magazine. The winery staff guides you through the tasting and history of each wine. As with the other wineries mentioned above, the views at Stags Leap are unbelievable.

Texas is the United States’ fifth largest wine producing state. The Texas Hill Country, which spans throughout Austin, Fredericksburg, Lampasas and New Braunfels, comprises of approximately 50 stunning and unique wineries. Although each winery boasts its own personality, they share a commitment to hospitality and quality. When visiting the Texas Hill Country, you are sure to enjoy an award-winning experience.

Each winery produces their wine with passion. Hospitality is a natural gesture in the Hill Country. Being that Texas Hill Country Wineries host events year-round, there’s always a reason to visit. The hosted events include food and wine pairing dinners (because there’s nothing like having the perfect pair for your wine), live music, grape stomps, and applicable holiday events. Located in Fredericksburg, the vineyard produces 100% Texas wine grapes. All of their wine is made locally and with love. Stop by their tasting room, have a sip (or sips) and explore some good ole’ Texas wine.

Although there are a few wineries mentioned here, there are a plethora of great wineries (too many to name here) both in Italy and the United States. Be sure to add a wine tour/tasting to your activity bucket list. A wine tour is just one way to learn local history and immerse in the local culture. Like many, you probably have Hawaii on your bucket list. You know you desire to go but have the slightest idea of where to start or what island to visit.

All of Hawaii’s islands are breathtaking. Of the ones that are open to tourists, the best one to visit simply boils down to what you’re looking to experience during your vacation. If your vacation goal is diversity (i.e. beautiful beaches, city life, nightlife, shopping, surfing, stunning views, popular tours & attractions, etc.), the popular island of Oahu is a wise choice.

When visiting the island of Oahu, there is just so much to do and see and the desire to do and see it all can easily become overwhelming. You have to pace yourself so you don’t end needing a vacation after a vacation. There is a method to not losing yourself while on vacation… have a plan . It is so easy to become distracted once you are there, so sticking with a plan is best. Surely, you will still veer a little off course here and there, but adhering to your plan for the most part will save you time and frustration. 2. Visit the Dole Plantation to experience a pretty cool Maze along other things. Take to the fields and indulge in a little history of the pineapple (specifically how they’re grown and how they tie to the Hawaiian culture). Don’t leave the plantation without trying some of the famous Pineapple Ice Cream, stopping by the gift store for gifts, souvenirs and iconic goodies and purchasing a pineapple or two to take home with you.

3. For the adventure in you, take an adrenaline wrenching hike up Diamond Head .

4. Plan a day of shopping at the Swap Meet located at Aloha Stadium. This is where you are sure to find all kinds of bargains and unique cultural gifts, souvenirs or just a little something for yourself. Be sure though to put some very comfortable walking shoes.

5. Paint the town in Waikiki. Go shopping, enjoy the barrage of eateries, enjoy the nightlife, etc..

6. Paying a visit to Pearl Harbor is a must. There are several tours and activities that you can partake in including the coveted USS Arizona Memorial, which pays tribute to all the brave military members who gave the ultimate sacrifice during the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.

7. Visit the Polynesian Cultural Center to immerse in the rich culture of Polynesia through various activities and individual island experiences all I one location. Hang out with the local island natives and learn about their culture through music, dance and traditions.

8. And of course, a visit to Hawaii would not be complete without a Luau , so be sure to catch one either at the Polynesian Cultural Center or at one of the various locations around the island.

The likelihood of all or some of these attractions/activities being on your list is high, but if all of them aren’t, it’s ok, you can always return for future visits. Because there is so much more to do in addition to the attractions/activities mentioned here, you just can’t pay them ALL a visit in one trip.
